1. Strap style choice matters

• Single-Strap (Backpack Style): Our most popular option. Easiest to put on and take off—great for calm, cooperative hens. A few very determined hens can learn to wriggle out.
• Double-Strap (Cross-Body): Best for “Houdini” hens and full-time free-rangers. Much harder to remove on their own, but expect a more dramatic adjustment period at first.

2. The “Backwards Circus” and “Hen Freeze” are normal

• When you first put any saddle on—especially the double-strap—hens may freeze, walk backward, high-step, or roll.
• This is a normal reaction to the new sensation of straps and fabric on their back and under their wings.
• Give treats, speak calmly, and allow a few sessions for them to adjust.

Pro Tip: Put the saddle on at night while she is roosting. She will wake up wearing it and is usually far less stressed.

3. Quick sizing check

• Large (Standard): Fits ~90% of common laying breeds (RIR, Barred Rock, Easter Egger, etc.).
• Extra Large: Only for very large breeds like English Orpingtons, Jersey Giants, or big roosters.
• Medium: Larger bantams and Silkies.
• Small: Medium-sized bantams.

Will the rooster still mate?
Yes. The saddle allows natural mating behavior; it simply protects your hen’s skin and feathers from damage.

How to Fit & Train Your Hen

• The “Hen Freeze” is Normal: When you first put it on, your hen might freeze, walk backward, or act “paralyzed.” Don’t panic—this is a natural response. Give her a few minutes (and a treat) and she will usually relax.
• Right size = no slipping: A correctly sized saddle won’t slide sideways. Most common layers are Large; only choose XL or Small/Medium when your hen clearly falls outside the “average layer” size.
• Adjust straps for a snug, flat fit: Straps should be snug enough that the saddle lies flat across the back without gaping but not so tight that they dig into feathers or skin. Aim for one finger of space under the strap.
• Check during movement: After fitting, watch your hen walk, dust bathe, and hop onto the roost. Adjust if you see twisting, shifting, or rubbing.
• Night-time fitting tip: Fitting while she’s calm on the roost makes the first experience easier for both of you.
