From Geology to Geese: Our Feature in Women's Insider
I recently had a bit of a "pinch me" moment. Seeing your life’s work summarized in a headline is always a surreal experience, but the recent feature in Women's Insider truly stopped me in my tracks. The article, titled "Texas Scientist Leaves Six-Figure Career to Save 200+ Animals, Builds Business One Invention at a Time," captures the heart of why Crazy K Farm exists in a way that left me feeling incredibly grateful.
If you haven't seen it yet, I’d love for you to read the full story here: Texas Scientist Leaves Six-Figure Career to Save 200+ Animals.
Walking Away from the Oil Fields
As the article highlights, my life looked very different back in 2009. I was a petroleum geologist with a six-figure salary, working in a corporate world that often feels like a different universe compared to my life now in Hempstead, Texas. But when my special-needs daughter needed me, and I began to witness the gaps in care for farm animals, the choice became clear.
Leaving a stable, high-paying career to run an animal sanctuary wasn't the "safe" choice, but it was the right one. I traded business suits for muck boots and boardrooms for barnyards. I didn't just want to watch animals suffer from issues like bumblefoot or rooster aggression; I wanted to solve those problems.
The Reality of Running a Sanctuary
One part of the Women's Insider piece that I am particularly glad they included is the financial reality of what we do. It’s easy to look at cute photos of our rescued goats or chickens on Instagram and miss the sheer scale of the operation behind the scenes.
Currently, it costs approximately $3,800 every single month just to keep the sanctuary running. That covers:
- Feed: For over 200 animals, including chickens, ducks, cats, and livestock.
- Medical Care: Many of our residents come to us with special needs or injuries that require ongoing veterinary attention.
- Maintenance: Safe shelter requires constant upkeep, especially against the Texas elements.
Innovation Born from Necessity
This is where you—our customers—come into the story. The article does a wonderful job explaining that products like the Hen Saver, Birdy Bootie, and Kitty Holster weren't just invented to fill a shelf. They were invented because I had animals right here in front of me that needed help, and the solutions didn't exist yet.
- I watched ducks lose their ability to walk, so I created the Birdy Bootie.
- I saw hens suffering from aggression, so I designed the Hen Saver.
Your Support Changes Lives
What I hope you take away from this feature is that Crazy K Farm is a mission-driven engine. We don't have big investors or corporate backing. We have you.
Every time you purchase a harness for your cat or a saddle for your hen, you are directly funding that $3,800 monthly bill. You are filling feed bowls and paying for vet visits. You are the reason we can keep saying "yes" to animals in need.
Thank you to Women's Insider for shining a light on our work, and thank you to everyone who has supported this wild, wonderful journey from geology to geese.
