Single Strap Hen Savers: secures to your chicken like a backpack.

  • One strap that forms two loops: one for each wing
  • Hens love them!
  • Owners do not love that some hens can remove them

Double Strap Hen Savers: crosses the chicken’s chest

  • Two straps that cross to make three loops: one for each wing and one for the head
  • Hens hate them at first!
  • Owners love that hens can't remove them

Because the double-strap style crosses the chicken’s chest, it take most chickens time to get used to. Some customers refer to this time as “waiting for the backwards circus to end.”

The single-strap Hen Saver® secures to your chicken like a backpack: pull the left loop of the strap over your chicken’s left wing and the right loop over the right wing. Check that the straps are not caught in any feathers and be sure to center the apron on the strap so that it sits squarely on your chicken.

The double-strap Hen Saver® is secured by placing your chicken’s head through the loops made by the intersection of the two straps and then pulling the left strap over the left wing, and the right strap over the right wing. Be sure to keep a finger between the straps and the chicken’s throat while you pull the straps over the wings so as not to inadvertently choke the chicken. Check that the straps are not caught in any feathers.

Put the apron on first, and then pull the strap on the shoulder protector over your chicken’s head.

Our copyrighted, digitally-printed eyes were designed by us with the help of a raptor expert. They are designed to look like owl eyes. Owls and Hawks are natural enemies and they do not share territory. They have worked 100% where tested, but results might vary depending on regional location.

Hen Saver® is available in five sizes:

Standard/Large (fits most standard (medium-large sized hens and small roosters)
Extra Large (fits standard roosters and larger hens)
Medium (fits most bantam hens and small bantam roosters)
Small (fits short backed or thick tailed bantams; Silkies, etc.)
Extra Extra Large (fits most large standard roosters and small turkeys)
They are equally effective, but there are some differences that can guide you to select the one that best suits your needs.

Fixed shoulder protector: the shoulder protector is permanently sewn onto the apron. It is not adjustable and therefore is less forgiving of sizing issues. But it is a bit less pricey.

Removable shoulder protector: the shoulder protector is attached to the apron with hook and loop fasteners and can be removed and re-installed. You can remove the shoulder protectors whenever you wish, for hot weather, rain, during setting, etc. An additional benefit of a removable protector is that a single hen apron can be re-used by other chickens and the protector used on chickens prone to shoulder damage and not used on chickens not prone to suffering shoulder damage. Additionally, the removable protector can be swapped out with our super sturdy and paractically undestructable Wing Armor sholder protector.
What is a Hen Apron?

A hen apron, or chicken saddle, is a device you put on your hens to protect their backs from roosters during mating. When roosters mate with hens, the hens often sustain feather loss and cuts and gashes on their backs and shoulders that can lead to infection, picking, cannibalism and death.

Yes! Here is a sampling:

"My chickens are very happy in their new “garb” and are growing back feathers quite nicely.  I’m attaching a picture.  We had a Benedictine priest and some nuns visit and they thought the hens looked as if they were nuns in various habits: Benedictine dress (black), Benedictine work (denim) and Franciscan (brown). They might be right!" Gayle Dumas, The Fuzzy Farm
"The saddles are absolutely fantastic.  Thanks again!"
"Love the saddles!! Excellent product."
"What a great product!"
"Thank you for selling this product."
"I'm just so excited to find your Hen Savers, I'm just beside myself..."
"I want  to thank you for coming up with such a great product -- I am very impressed with its high quality and durability. I bought some Hen Savers from you because our hen, Faith, who had lived through a bobcat attack (thanks to God for answering my prayers), was loosing feathers from our rooster and after her making it through her severe wounds from the bobcat, well I wasn't going to let her get scratched up and injured anymore! I also noticed her exposed skin was getting chapped from the cold winds and cold temperatures. Lotion wasn't helping enough and this coverage has made a world of difference. Thank you so much for this product."
"You provide a fine product, and I will order from you again in the future"
"I just want to tell you that the first chicken apron I ordered has done wonders for my hen.  At first she acted funny with her head down and other hens pecked at her head and chased her around the pen, but by the next morning she was walking around with her head up and prouder than she had been before.  The apron looked like it belonged there and was doing it's job wonderfully.  The brown color matched her feathers just right and I am so happy I found your product advertised in Backyard Poultry magazine!  Thank you so much."

"I wanted to write and tell you that I purchased three of your Hen Saver saddles about a month ago. My hens' backs and shoulders were pretty bare from the rooster. After wearing the Hen Saver for only a month, all three hens are growing their feathers back. It took about two days for them to get used to the saddle, but now they are completely comfortable with it. I'm very happy with your product and with the fact that it has saved my hens' backs & shoulders. All in all, a great product. Thanks again."

"Just wanted you to know, I received my order of hen savers today.  Thanks for the speedy response.  "THE GIRLS" got their aprons put on and after the backwards circus was over, I can see where these will be just the ticket for them.  One thing I noticed right away was how they fit so well that they cover the exact areas that had been worn and raw. Perfect also because winter has really set in here in Montana."

"Just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with my order of 2 hen savers. We have the most spoiled hens, but unfortunately our rooster has two favorites. I have tried twice to make them those covers, but the hens always worked their way out of mine, yours stay put. They're working great, protecting them from the rooster and also keeping them warm (It's been very cold and snowy here in Michigan.) Great product."
"Really  enjoy  the  aprons.  My  little  girls  are  at  peace thank you for the aprons. They are now getting their feathers back. They really stay on. THANK YOU."

"I received my hen aprons today. Much thicker than others that I have bought and they look SSSOOOOO good!"

"The hen savers are great! I'll be back to buy more. My hens say THANK YOU!"
"Very cool invention !"
"The Hen Saver worked great for our hen Misty.  After losing  most of her back and shoulder feathers in a hawk attack, she never re-grew them due to other chickens in the flock picking on her.  We saw the Hen Savers on the internet and decided to try one. The other chickens immediately left her alone and after only a week we could see new feathers starting to grow.  Now after a couple of weeks she's covered with new feathers just in time for the cold weather here in Connecticut.  Not only did the Hen Saver work great but the people at Crazy K Farm were really helpful in finding just the right apron to work for us."
"If you have chickens you need this Apron! 5 Stars."

My chicken is walking backwards (or lying down, or doing back flips, or rolling over…). What should I do?

The double-strap style crosses the chicken’s chest, which takes most chickens time to get used to. Some customers refer to this time as “waiting for the backwards circus to end.” First, be sure the straps of the apron are not too tight. If they are, you need a larger size. If the straps fit well, but your chicken is uncomfortable with the straps crossing her chest, or her antics cause other chickens to peck her, she needs a single-strap model.

The Hen Saver® is falling to the side. What should I do?

Make sure the apron is centered on the straps and on the chicken. You may have to adjust it periodically. The single-strap model is more accommodating of size issues and almost never slides around. The double strap, if it is too large, will flop to the side. If the apron is flopping to the side you need a single-strap model or a smaller size double-strap model.

The Hen Saver® is lifting up. What should I do?

This is normal. The Hen Saver® is intended to lift up when your chicken flaps her wings. This is so that air can circulate under the apron and to enable your chicken to successfully take a dirt bath. If the apron stands up and stays up, the apron is either too small for your hen or too wide between her shoulders. You need a different size.
